Student Enrichment

Pasadena Police Department Intern Program

The Pasadena Police Department has launched an internship program to provide an opportunity for students to explore law enforcement through practical field experience. The program allows students to learn fundamental business skills in the Records Section, conduct community outreach in the Community Services Section, and learn proper patrol procedures by participating in weekly assignments with patrol officers. Upon passing this academy, students earn two college credits from Pasadena City College.
The inaugural class, pictured above, includes: Corey Green, Courtney Green and Devin Bennett from Marshall Fundamental; Efrain Sosa, and Sibouh Koundajian from Blair IB Magnet School, and Isaac Minaya, and Trevon Sailor from John Muir High School.
Internship Program—Linking School to Careers in Local Government
Fifteen PUSD students representing four high schools have been selected for an eight week paid summer internship program through an educational collaboration between the City, PUSD and PCC which was developed through the City/Schools partnership program. The summer program is supported by the Pasadena City College/Glendale Community College Career Technical Education (CTE) Collaborative grant, the City and PUSD as part of the Career Pathways initiative. Professional city staff from Water and Power, Public Works and the Human Services and Recreation Departments are mentoring students working in their departments to gain hands-on training and experience in a real-world work environment while learning about a range of city services and potential careers. The PCC CTE Collaborative will also be working with PUSD and City staff to develop related academic programs and coursework to help students connect their studies with future career pathways through high school and college programs. Through the application process, students were required to write an essay describing why they wanted to be part of the Internship Program. Students will spend four weeks in each department and will share their experience with classmates through presentations this fall. The fall sessions will allow students to work 10 hours per week and still maintain full student status in either high school or college. As part of the Community College Collaborative grant, students will be encouraged to continue their studies through related college and career and technical education courses and dual enrollment programs to develop professional careers in related areas. This innovative program to connect academics with real world work experience through a collaboration between Pasadena City professional staff and local schools and colleges will create a new model for career pathways programs in California.
Afterschool Programs
Afterschool Programs sponsored by both PUSD and the City are offered at all elementary school sites and several secondary sites. The Citywide Afterschool Recreation Program currently operates at 14 sites and will welcome McKinley School as their newest location this fall. When programs are co-located on the same campus, participants can take advantage of some programming opportunities supplied by the other afterschool provider. For example, City staff offer a fitness program three days a week to all afterschool participants, whether they are enrolling the Citywide Recreation Afterschool Program or another afterschool Program. PasadenaLEARNs opens its Friday special events to all afterschool participants.
Kids Kloset
An annual clothing and supplies drive is sponsored by City and PUSD employees for PUSD’s Families in Transition, families who are homeless with children attending PUSD. The drive ensures that these students start the school year with adequate clothing, personal items and school supplies. Students and their families also have access to these donated goods throughout the year or as the need arises.
The Families in Transition Office is located on the first floor of the Education Center, 351 South Hudson Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91101.
